Fungal infectious disease, caused by Aspergillus fumigatus, in which the typical sign is gasping for breath, especially in young chicks. Sometimes the same organism causes eye lesions or chronic lesions in older birds. The fungus can infect plant material and many species of animals including birds and man. Occasionally similar lesions are produced by other species of Aspergillus or even other fungi such as Penicillium, Absidia etc. One hundred of domestic hens aged 15 to 30 days presented respiratory signs such as dyspnea and mortality up to 35%. This was the only flock in the slum where a bed of sunflower shells was used. We realized necropsy, histopathological examination and microbiological studies. At necropsy, severe ascites, pulmonary congestion and extensive multifocal granulomatous pneumonia were recorded. Histopathological examination revealed chronic multifocal mycotic granulomatous pneumonia. Aspergillus fumigatus was identified by microbiological study from pulmonary specimens. After disinfecting the floor and changing the bed no clinical signs were recorded in the farm. Several factors alone or in combination may cause ascites in broilers, pulmonary hypertension being one of the most important. Hypoxemia is a major factor causing pulmonary hypertension in broiler chickens. The severe chronic granulomatous pneumonia caused by A. fumigatus in the chickens of the present study may have caused hypoxia, pulmonary hypertension, heart failure and ascites.
