چکیده Urban forestry presents a promising strategy to enhance ecosystem services (ESs) and manage climate change through increased carbon sequestration (CS). This study investigates how alterations in land use and landscape patterns on CS in the Dehloran region of Iran, utilizing satellite imagery and the InVEST model. Our analysis reveals significant shifts in land use from grassland to agriculture and built-up areas, driven by urbanization and population growth in the study area. Despite these changes, the implementation of urban forestry projects has notably increased carbon storage capacity. The study employs the Random Forest (RF) technique to assess the nonlinear effects of landscape metrics on CS, highlighting the critical role of landscape diversity and shape in CS. Metrics such as Shannon's Diversity Index and Landscape Shape Index were found to significantly influence CS, with diverse and complex landscape patterns enhancing carbon storage. The results indicate that while urbanization and agricultural expansion have led to a reduction in grassland, the increase in plantation areas due to urban forestry projects has positively impacted carbon storage. Our findings demonstrate that urban forestry in the area of interest, enhances CS by leveraging landscape diversity and shape, offering valuable insights for sustainable land management and climate resilience strategies for policy-making.
