A number of studies were aimed at resolving the issue in favour of one of two theoretical frameworks – Localizationism and Connectionism – in neurolinguistics. Localizationism refers to the idea that functions related to language use are located in distinct areas of the brain. On the contrary, Connectionism proposes that language functions emerge from interactions of neural networks.In order to find an answer to the question posed above, this research uses a multiple case study involving four children suffering from various kinds of language impairments. Two cases include children with deficiencies in producing language units while comprehending language units normally. Another two patients have problems with language comprehension but can produce some parts of their languages normally.For collecting the necessary information about the state of language functions in such patients, medical reports, neurological evaluations, MRI results, EEG results, and language assessment records were used. Analysis of the data collected in each individual case led to the conclusion that dissociations between language comprehension and production are impossible according to localization theories.Instead, neuroimaging analysis and the results of medical tests showed that language processes depend on connections between numerous brain regions rather than on language centres themselves. Thus, Connectionism seems more plausible in the light of this study.
