A system and method for microwave sensing measures constituents of ambient material such as bitumen, water and clay in a SAGD operation. The system includes a sensor coupled to a processor. The sensor includes a single exposed wire with a coiled portion. The processor may receive data from the sensor, including resonance data. The processor may analyze data from the sensor to derive concentrations of constituents of ambient material.
