Abstract

A rapid fixed bed system for temperature swing adsorption (RTSA), which uses solid sorbents for dehydration of butanolwas studied in detail and mathematically modelled. The packed bed was simulated using proper partial and algebraic equations which solved by central difference method in MATLAB software. The equilibrium relationship and fixed-bed breakthrough curves were determined experimentally. Value of unknown parameters such as equilibrium constants, liquid film mass transfer coefficient, intra-particle diffusion coefficient, and axial diffusivity were estimated using appropriate relationships. The model was quite good fitted to experimental breakthrough data. Finally, the gained results obviously show that it would be possible to operate a complete RSTA cycle in just a few hours (2-3 h) to allow a large quantity of organic solvent (20 L) dehydrated with reasonable concentration.
