Abstract

Semiconductor nanocrystals have emerged as animportant class of materials because of their tunable optoelectronicproperties that arise from quantum size effects. Theycan be used as active components in functional nanocomposites, chemical sensors, biomedicine, optoelectronics,and nanoelectronics[1–3].Here, wereport the preparation of ZnO nanorods via Homogenous crystallization in solution, in the absence of external influences, and at room temperature. This allowstheir preparation at much lower conditions (25 °C), than previously reported (225 °C). Crystalline ZnO nanorods, about 100-300 nm in diameter and up to several micrometer long, were identified after a few hours of aging. X-ray diffraction patterns and FE-SEM images show the nanorod ZnO thin films have hexagonal structure [4]. The green luminescence band or deep band emission), literally the emission band between 420 and 700nm, in ZnO have been well studied. It is surprising that that its origin is still a matter of discussion anddebate [5]. Our ZnO nanorods have a deep band emission peak in the range between 345 and 445 nm. This indicate that the deep band emission peak of ZnO nanorods is blue-shifted by ≈ 150nm with respect to the bulk ZnO, probably due to the quantum size effect as expected from the nanosized nature of the ZnO nanorods.
