Abstract

In this thesis, MgO-CuO nanocomposite was prepared using arabic gum as a green and eco-friendly stabilizing agent. The structural and morphological properties of the synthesized nanocomposite were investigated by XRD, FESEM, TEM, EDX mapping, BET and DRS analyses. The XRD pattern confirmed the presence of MgO with a cubic crystalline structure and CuO with a monoclinic crystalline structure. TEM image revealed nearly spherical nanoparticles with an average size of 25-30 nm. BET analysis showed a specific surface area of about 32.877 m2/g and DRS measurement showed that the optical band gap energy calculated from the Tauc plot is about 1.58 eV, which proves the strong and effective absorption in the visible light region. The photocatalytic activity of the nanocomposite was assessed using Direct Red 31 as a model pollutant. The obtained nanocomposite showed high photocatalytic activity in dye degradation, with 96% of the direct Red 31 dye degraded within 6 min. Reusability tests over four consecutive cycles showed that the photocatalytic performance remained highly stable, confirming the strong durability and stability of the nanocomposite.
