Metaphor has been the subject of much researches in recent decades. A metaphor is a figure of speech that describes an objects or an action in away that is not literally true but helps explain an idea or make a comparison. This study aims to provide a comparative analysis of metaphorical expressions of sorrow and happiness in English and Arabic. Thus, to achieve this goal the similarities and differences between the two languages in the use of metaphorical expressions when conceptualizing two emotiowill be drawn. The theoretical framework which has been chosen for the study is derived from conceptual metaphor theories of Lakoff and Johnson (1980) and Kovecses (2000; 2002). In this theory, the target domain (abstract concept) is conceptualized by the source domain (concrete concept). Totally, the researcher collects 136 phrases from Arabic language that are commonly used to describe feelings of happiness and sorrow. Then, the researcher categorizes these expressions based on their metaphorical mapping, where she compared them with English expressions following the theory of conceptual metaphor. Findings from the comparison of metaphorical expressions and maps between Arabic and English shows that they have several basic levels in conceptualizing feelings of happiness and sorrow. Although the two cultures are very different and there is a cultural gap between them, there is a common ground between the two cultures when describing emotional states such as happiness and sorrow and on the other hand, there are differences in the description of the degree of each emotional state between the two cultures.
