Tautology is a statement which must be true in all circumstances. The current research analyzed tautological expressions in two campaign political speeches by British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. The study aimed to explore the most linguistic structural types of tautological expressions in the selected election speeches. It also elucidated the most adequate theories which can be best used to analyze the pragmatic functions of tautologies of political discourses. Searle`s (1969) speech acts and Leech`s (1983) politeness maxims were the most adequate pragmatic theories that can be best used to discuss and analyze the pragmatic functions of tautologies of the two political speeches. This study adopted two level of analysis. First, the lexical level, in which there was an analysis of different types of linguistic tautologies according to Moore`s (2001) forms. The other one was the pragmatic analysis that was associated with the pragmatic functions of tautological expressions in the two political speeches. The expressions were analyzed according to speech acts classifications and categories of politeness maxims. The study analyzed the selected data qualitatively, in order to achieve the research aims, and enhance the findings of the study. The study concluded that tautologies expressions can be formulated by different types of redundancies which were: contextual redundancy, pleonasm, antanaclasis, and paronomasia. The study also concluded that tautology can be understood better if the researcher investigates the pragmatic strategies that the politicians used in their speeches in a rhetoric way.
