چکیده ABSTRACT EFL learner employ strategies such as communicative strategies (CSs) in their process of reading and their reading comprehension in order to facilitate the reading process and improve their comprehension, consequently becoming more successful scheme users. The purpose of the present study was, therefore, to investigate whether there is a correlation between EFL leaners reading comprehension skills and their use of communicative strategies in the context of Iraq. To this end, 64 EFL learners who were studying English at Wassit University were selected to participate in the study after homogenizing through a proficiency test (a modified TOEFL-like test). The design of the study was a quantitative approach and data were collected through a reading comprehension test, and Rabab’ah’s Taxonomy of communication strategies (2001). The results of the study revealed that applying CSs had a significant effect on the improvement of EFL learners 'reading comprehension performance and achievement. The findings also indicated that EFL learners used only eight communicative strategies from Rabab’ah’s taxonomy (2001), and all affect their reading comprehension in a significant way (α > 0.05). The results provided teachers, educators, administrators and policy makers in the field of EFL with a highly effective manner of teaching that can be comprehended and applied by students, curriculum developers, curriculum designers, and others.
